ABSTRACT: The AI-HSS project aims to achieve a complete, optimized system for wastewater treatment. To achieve this ambitious goal, a system called REM, with new elements that combine several treatment methods will be modeled, improved, optimized and prepared for automation and control. The objectives are: (1) to extend REM applicability, optimize design, performance and establish its efficiency and economic potential, thus taking a step forward towards industrial feasibility; (2) development of a general methodology of modeling and optimization (which can be easily applied for a large number of pollutants), using methods of Artificial Intelligence (Neural Networks and Metaheuristics of Biological Inspiration). In order to highlight its flexibility and ability to deliver economically viable results, the new system will be tested on a set of industrial effluents (an important step in a possible scale expansion and transformation of AI-HSS into an industrial treatment system for the elimination of pollutants)..
